One of our favourite restaurants in the Algarve is one which isn’t too far from home. Not only is Luar da Foia in a prime spot for far reaching views across the Algarve, but it also serves the best meat on the mountain!
Most definitely a meat-eaters paradise, Luar da Foia is situated between the town of Monchique and the mountain peak of Foia. During the warmer months, the best spot to dine is most definitely out on the terrace where you can see all the way down to the coast. As the sun goes down, millions of twinkling lights make it one of the prettiest sights in the region.
Sadly, I neglected to take any photos of the view because we were meeting friends for dinner – some of whom we hadn’t seen in a long time, so photography became less of a priority. As you can see from the photos that I did take…. they’re not the best on this occasion. But I promise to take better ones the next time we head on up the mountain!
But back to the food. Luar da Foia offers some of the most delicious grilled meat dishes, including mixed kebab, lamb kebab, lamb chops and chicken kebab (which is what we all ate on this occasion). But while you’re looking at the menu, I recommend you taste some of their presunto which is quite literally mouthwatering.
When the weather is warmer though, and we sit inside, in front of a roaring log fire, we usually opt for some of their more yummy wintery dishes like leg of pork (the meat is sticky and divine), wild boar stew or suckling pig. I’m telling you, this is most certainly one of the best places for Portuguese meat! Utterly delicious.
Not only that, but the service is always good – the serving staff always on hand to help with a sense of humour. Excellent wines accompany the meal, and then there is a wonderful selection of desserts to finish off with. Oh and I mustn’t forget the locally made medronho (a kind of fire water) which isn’t to everybody’s taste but worth a mention nonetheless.
