My first ever book club and why life’s too short to read things you don’t enjoy

Would you believe that up until recently, I had never attended a book club? Considering how book-obsessed I am, and the fact that I’m an author, you’d have thought that I’d be a frequent book clubber, right? Wrong. So when I was invited to join a local book club by a friend, I was delighted.

However, I was also a little bit worried that the books chosen might be a bit ‘high brow’ for my liking. I’m a fan of Young Adult books, you see. You know, the likes of Twilight, Hunger Games and Harry Potter?! I also love really light-hearted books, like the Shopaholic series, Bridget Jones and The Devil Wears Prada (this is also the kind of book I like to write myself). However, occasionally I’ll read something a little bit deeper, like Memoirs of a Geisha, for example (which I adored!) and The Handmaid’s Tale (again, I loved it!). I wrote a post about some of my favourite books last year.

But I haven’t read any of the classics since my A level English Lit class! I’m also the type of person that thinks life is way too short to read anything you don’t enjoy. What’s the point in forcing yourself to do something that’s just not enjoyable in your spare time? I have given up on a few books that just didn’t float my boat. The Time Traveller’s Wife, for instance. So many people raved about that book but I just could not get into it so I closed it and past it on.

Book club

But I am open minded and will give pretty much anything a go (within reason). So, the book club. We met up at my friend’s place at 7.30pm and I met five fabulous women and we talked and talked and talked. However we didn’t actually get to discussing what we’d read until quite late lol! In fact, I didn’t get home until 1.15am!!! I was like a zombie lol! But I’d had a lovely time and I am looking forward to the next one – which has been arranged for breakfast time lol.

The Fifth Child

book club

As for the book we discussed, it was The Fifth Child by Doris Lessing. Have you read it? It’s quite disturbing in a sense, but a very easy and short read. It is described as being a bit of a horror, which I wouldn’t quite call it that. Let’s just say I’m glad it was a short read because I doubt I would have wanted to read much more! As for next month’s book, we’ve chosen a short story (The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman) and Celeste Ng’s Everything I Never Told You. I shall let you know how I get on with them…

My latest book

In the meantime, here’s a link to my most recent book, Aphrodite’s Closet. It’s a light-hearted chick lit story, exactly the kind of thing I love to read! Have a look at the reviews, it recently received some fabulous ones when I toured it online!!
