Hello lovely readers! It’s that time of the month again where I join my fabulous friends Shelbee from Shelbee on the Edge and Marsha from Marsha in the Middle for our monthly Songful Style challenge. For those of you new to this series, each month one of us picks a song and we style an outfit inspired by it. Last month, Marsha chose the catchy Record Player by Daisy The Great. This month, I’ve picked the hauntingly beautiful Burning House by Cam.
Burning House is a poignant ballad by American country artist Cam. Released in 2015, the song quickly became a hit, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Cam, whose full name is Camaron Marvel Ochs, co-wrote this soulful track with Tyler Johnson and Jeff Bhasker. The lyrics are inspired by a vivid dream Cam had about trying to rescue a former lover from a burning house, reflecting the regret and heartbreak over a failed relationship. The song’s gentle acoustic guitar and Cam’s emotive voice create a hauntingly beautiful melody that lingers long after the song ends.
I chose this song because I absolutely LOVE it. Every time I hear it on my playlist, I have to ‘rewind’ and play it again. It’s just such a beautiful and haunting song that resonates deeply with me. It was my oldest pal, Emma, who introduced me to the song a few years ago. Whenever I hear it, it also reminds me of her. Emma and I were best friends way back between the ages of 6 and 10 years old, and then I left Rotherham, UK to move to Portugal. We’ve always kept in touch over the years though, and now she lives in Mallorca.
For my outfit, I chose the easy route of a white outfit because Cam is wearing a white dress in her video. I opted for an old white ‘gypsy’ skirt from Calzedonia, a simple white vest top from Intimissimi, and a white knitted cardigan that I thrifted. Given the hot weather, my nude Ecco sandals were the perfect choice to keep my feet cool. To accessorise, I added a simple pendant necklace similar to the one Cam wore in her video and a couple of pretty rings that I inherited. My colourful handbag, made by my best pal Sarah, added a vibrant touch to the ensemble, but I’ll be telling you all about her creations in an upcoming post.
Writing this post has stirred a deep sadness in me because of the topic of house fires. Jasper, in Canada, a place we visited and fell in love with 13 or 14 years ago, has been ravaged by devastating fires recently. The beloved and historical town has suffered immense destruction. My heart aches for all those affected by this tragedy.
This outfit, inspired by the ethereal vibe of “Burning House,” captures the essence of the song with its light, airy, and slightly nostalgic feel. Don’t forget to check out how Shelbee and Marsha styled their outfits based on the song. And if you’ve ever styled an outfit inspired by a song, I’d love to hear about it in the comments below! Add all your posts to the link-up below, and don’t forget to join us again next month, when we’ll be styling the fabulous song, Vienna by Billy Joel, chosen by Shelbee! See you soon!
