Recently, whilst visiting Sagres, we found a real gem: Café Espresso. Located within the Mareta Beach Hotel, it reminds me of the likes of Starbucks (which, sadly, we don’t have in the region – we have to travel to Lisbon for a Starbucks treat!).
One of the things I love about living in Portugal is the cafe culture. Unlike Britain, where people tend to meet for a beer, here we generally meet up in one of the thousands of cafes and socialise over a cup of Portuguese coffee (which, in my opinion is the best coffee in existence!).
Most coffee shops here in the Algarve offer straight up espresso coffee, Abatando (Americano), café com leite (white coffee), galão (latte) and the usual teas, cakes and savoury delights. Few offer milk altenatives – which is one of the reasons I was so excited at finding Café Espresso in Sagres who also offer soya milk or almond milk! Yay!
On our last visit, I opted for a cup of hot chocolate alongside a chocolate muffin, while Michael chose a fruit smoothie. Both drinks were made with almond milk and both were yummy. The muffin was sticky and lovely too 🙂
The setting is really lovely. The hotel containing the cafe is quite pretty and located very close to the most gorgeous beach, although you can’t see the beach from within. If you’re looking for somewhere a bit different to visit, I’d highly recommend you hop in your car and amble on down to Sagres, stop for a spot of breakfast or lunch in Cafe Espresso before a stroll on the beach. It really is a wonderful Sunday treat.
