When I was the assistant editor of a lifestyle magazine, I did a series of articles on beauty treatments that were available in the region. One of them was particularly memorable for all the wrong reasons. Read on for my embarrassing spa treatments…
It was at a local *thalassotherapy spa where they have all kinds of weird and wonderful treatments for anyone able to afford them. I was invited to spend a morning there where a number of treatments were planned. My favourite was a deliciously relaxing shiatsu massage but the others? Erm… not so much fun.
After literally peeing myself (just a little bit) in an aggressive swimming pool (with a bunch of other people) with jets coming at me in all the wrong places, I was relieved to get out and head for my next treatment. I looked at my schedule, noted I had to be at room number whatever it was and wandered over. On entering, I was rather apprehensive at what was coming. It was a long thin tiled room with nothing in it. After waiting a few minutes, a woman arrived. She wasn’t very friendly. And she told me to strip.
Hm? Really? She nodded. My all-in-one bathing suit would be a problem. Erm… okay. I did as I was told and then she came at me with what can only be described as a fully flexed fire hose. What the…?! She literally hosed me down with water coming out at break-neck speed – freezing cold too. The temperature kept changing, cold, warm, hot, cold, cold, colder, freezing. It was not a nice experience. And all the while I was bollock naked. A fun time? Nope. A good article? Definitely. Oh what I would do for a good article (not really)!
Did I ever go back? Hm… I think you can answer that question. Although having said that, it was an amazing place and did offer some other wonderful treatments as well, so yes I actually probably would, I just wouldn’t go for the fire hose or the aggressive jet pool!
Something good did come out of it though. It gave me a fabulous chapter for the novel I was writing at the time, Forever Fredless. I love using artistic licence with my own experiences! If you’re curious, you can buy the book on Amazon.
Have you ever had any embarrassing spa treatments? Do tell…
” *Thalassotherapy (from the Greek word thalassa, meaning “sea”) is the medical use of seawater as a form of therapy. It is based on the systematic use of seawater, sea products, and shore climate. The properties of seawater are believed to have beneficial effects upon the pores of the skin.” Wikipedia
