Feel the Magic of Follow the Sun: A Songful Style Adventure

Welcome to another edition of Songful Style. My lovely co-hosts Shelbee from Shelbee on the Edge and Marsha from Marsha in the Middle join me in creating outfits inspired by songs. We skipped December to take a short break. In November we styled Aerosmith’s Pink, but we’re back this month and it was my turn to pick the song, and I chose Follow the Sun by Xavier Rudd.

At the time, it was November, and with the chill in the air, I found myself longing for the warmth and beauty of a summer’s day. This song fit the bill perfectly, with its soulful, uplifting vibe and the stunning imagery of the ocean in the music video.

The Artist

Xavier Rudd, born in 1978 in Torquay, Victoria, is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with an incredible talent for creating music that connects deeply with both nature and the soul. He’s known for playing all sorts of instruments, like the guitar, didgeridoo, harmonica, and even the banjo, which just shows how versatile he is. His songs often focus on spirituality, environmentalism, and Indigenous Australian rights, blending the beauty of Australia’s landscapes with a deep respect for its heritage.

The Song

Follow the Sun is one of those tracks that feels like a breath of fresh air—it’s all about slowing down, appreciating the present moment, and reconnecting with the natural world. Lines like “Tomorrow is a new day for everyone” and “Remember your place” remind us to find our rhythm with nature and reflect on our role in the bigger picture. Xavier once said, “We are all of this earth, not just living on this earth,” which sums up the heart of this song perfectly. Scroll down to the bottom of the post to read the lyrics in full.

The Outfit

I wanted my outfit to reflect the tranquillity and sparkle of the ocean, which led me to put together a look entirely in blues and teals. My floaty skirt transitions from cream at the top to teal and dark blues at the bottom, with silver streaks reminiscent of sunlight dancing on the water. I paired it with my blue-grey cowboy boots (a fab find on Vinted, as was the rest of the outfit!) and a cosy cropped woolly jumper in various shades of blue-teal. Beneath it, I layered a teal thermal t-shirt—because let’s be honest, no one wants to risk a belly reveal in chilly weather!

For accessories, I went all in on ocean vibes: a pale blue crystal pendant, silver and blue earrings (a birthday gift from Michael!), and my aquamarine ring featuring sweet little seahorses. To finish, I added a sleeveless denim jacket for an extra edge.

The location

The outfit felt magical, and I’d originally planned to take photos near the ocean while visiting friends on the west coast. Unfortunately, it got dark far earlier than I expected, so we missed our chance. The next morning, determined to capture the outfit, Michael and I set off despite the dreary, grey day. We ended up at a local reservoir (which has been nearly empty for years due to the lack of rain) and found a spot on a hill surrounded by trees. It was muddy and far from my dream location, but it had to do!

While the photos turned out okay, I’m already reminding myself to plan better next time—especially since we have a whole month for these challenges!

Follow the sun

Speaking of next month, Marsha has picked our song: Pleasant Valley Sunday by The Monkees. That should be a fun one to work with!

What does Follow the Sun mean to you? For me, it’s about embracing the beauty around us, soaking in the little joys, and finding light even on grey days. This outfit was my tribute to that spirit.

Follow The Sun Lyrics:

Follow, follow the sun
And which way the wind blows
When this day is done

Breath, breath in the air
Set your intentions
Dream with care

Tomorrow is a new day for everyone
A brand new moon, brand new sun
So follow, follow the sun
The direction of the birds
The direction of love
Breath, breath in the air
Cherish this moment
Cherish this breath

Tomorrow is a new day for everyone
Brand new moon, brand new sun
When you feel love coming down on you
Like a heavy wave
When you feel this crazy society
Headin’ to the strand
Take a straw to the nearest waters
And remember your place

Many moons have risen and fallen long, long before youve came
So which way is the wind blowin’
And what does your heart say?
So follow, follow the sun
And which way the wind blows

When this day is done…
