If you’ve ever been captivated by the gritty, dystopian world of Mad Max, you’ll know how hard it is not to get excited about a new instalment in this legendary franchise. I’ve been a fan since Mel Gibson’s iconic debut in the 70s, and the Mad Max saga has always had a special place in my heart. From the hauntingly atmospheric landscapes to the jaw-dropping action sequences, it’s a world that blends the brilliant with the terrifying.
One of my absolute favorites is Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, which was a personal treat partly because of the unforgettable Tina Turner. Her presence, along with the outrageous Thunderdome itself, made it a standout in the series.
Fast forward to the latest entry, Mad Max: Furiosa, and I was more than ready to dive back into that post-apocalyptic madness. This film is a prequel to the 2015 hit Mad Max: Fury Road, which starred Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as the iconic Imperator Furiosa. Furiosa delves into the backstory of the character Furiosa, exploring her origins and what shaped her into the formidable figure we saw in Fury Road. Let’s break down what worked, what didn’t, and why it’s a mixed bag for me.
The Furiosa Bright Spot: Anya Taylor-Joy
First things first, Anya Taylor-Joy. Wow. Her portrayal of the titular Furiosa is nothing short of phenomenal. I’ve always admired her range as an actress, and in this film, she brings depth and intensity to her character that’s both refreshing and riveting. Watching her journey unfold on screen was a highlight; she’s got this incredible ability to grow a character in a way that feels both organic and compelling. It’s the kind of performance that makes you believe in the character’s evolution and challenges.
A Fresh Breath: Tom Burke
Another notable mention is Tom Burke. If you’re a fan of the TV series Strike, where he plays the enigmatic Cormoran Strike, you’ll be pleased to know he brings a similar magnetic presence to Furiosa. Burke’s performance was a breath of fresh air, providing a much-needed contrast to the film’s more jarring elements. His character is well-cast and well-played, and his experience in Strike clearly shines through, adding depth and authenticity to his role. It’s a pleasure to see him on screen, and he adds a touch of sophistication and intrigue that balances out some of the film’s other missteps.
The Disappointment: Chris Hemsworth
Now, let’s talk about Chris Hemsworth. As someone who has enjoyed his performances as Thor and in various other roles, I was really looking forward to seeing him in Furiosa. Unfortunately, his portrayal was a huge letdown for me. His character felt more like a caricature than a fully fleshed-out role, which was a stark contrast to the nuanced performances you’d expect in a Mad Max film.
The prosthetics and overall design seemed to amplify this issue, making his character appear more like a costume party guest than a serious antagonist. It was baffling to watch someone who usually brings so much charm and depth to his roles deliver a performance that felt so out of sync with the rest of the movie.
Action and Effects: Over-the-Top but Entertaining
On a more positive note, the action scenes and special effects were exactly what you’d expect from a Mad Max film – over-the-top, outrageous, and absurdly entertaining. The film doesn’t shy away from its signature style of high-octane chaos, and in that regard, it stays true to the franchise’s roots. The special effects, while sometimes bordering on the ridiculous, fit within the universe’s established aesthetic and contributed to the film’s unique, albeit extreme, appeal.
Final Thoughts on Furiosa
Mad Max: Furiosa is a movie with its share of highs and lows. Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance is a standout, bringing both strength and sensitivity to the role of Furiosa. Tom Burke adds a refreshing touch with his compelling portrayal, reminding us of his talent beyond Strike. Unfortunately, Chris Hemsworth’s role and performance fell flat for me, which was a significant disappointment. It’s a film that, despite its flaws, manages to deliver the wild, chaotic energy that fans of the series expect. However, it’s hard to overlook how one miscast role can impact the overall experience.
In the end, Furiosa may not live up to the legendary status of its predecessors in every way, but it’s still worth a watch if you’re a fan of the Mad Max universe. Just be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions, from awe to bewilderment.
Have you read my review of The Lost Apothecary yet? It’s worlds away from Mad Max LOL but a thoroughly great read! Also, check out some of my favourite supernatural TV shows.
