This week’s Style Imitating Art inspiration piece is Heather, Sweet Peas and Butterfly, created in the 19th century by an anonymous British artist. Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar (14 Shades of Grey), Terri (Meadow Tree Style), and Daenel (Living Outside the Stacks). Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of the hosts selects an inspiration image and they each post the image on their blogs. The following Monday they share their art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10pm Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog. This week, the curator is Daenel. For the last Style Imitating Art challenge, we styled The Child’s Bath by Mary Cassatt.
Heather, Sweet Peas and Butterfly is such a pretty image with the most beautiful colours, but I had no idea how I would style an outfit based on it. So into my wardrobe I went…and spotted a scarf that I’d picked up at a thrift shop a few weeks ago. The colours were absolutely perfect! But how could I make it work for the warm weather? I certainly didn’t want to wrap it around my neck. Aha…how about the old scarf as a top trick?! Perfect! lol
So I wrapped it around my torso a couple of times, did a bit of googling and then chose this yellow necklace (yes…another gift from mother-in-law) to help hold it in place and it worked beautifully! The only problem was that the closure of this necklace uses magnets and they kept pulling apart lol. But it worked for the photos—if I was going to wear this outfit out of the house, I’d have to choose an alternative necklace. Not that that would be a problem—you know I’ve got lots of them from my MIL LOL!!
I tried a couple of different trousers, as well as a dress, but nothing worked as well as my trusty high waisted flared jeans so I ended up going with them. They’re so versatile, and I love their 70s vibe, which I believe the scarf as a top also has. Add in my wooden cream Replay heels and you’ve got my interpretation of Heather, Sweet Peas and Butterfly. In hindsight, I should have photographed the outfit against a lighter backdrop.
