Welcome to October’s edition of Songful Style! Hosted by myself, Shelbee (Shelbee on the Edge) and Marsha (Marsha in the Middle) Songful Style is a collaboration featuring outfits inspired by songs. We’re also inviting anyone who would like to join us, to post their own outfits in the link-up below. It doesn’t matter from what angle the song inspires the outfit, it can be from the lyrics, the title, the tune itself, the album cover, music video, etc. Last month our song was Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole and was chosen by Marsha. This month, our Songful Style song was chosen by me and is Look What You Made Me Do by Taylor Swift.
As today is Halloween, I wanted to choose a song that had some kind of spooky element to it. I had lots of common seasonal songs in mind, but nothing really jumped out at me, until I watched Taylor Swift’s amazing video for this fabulous song. I knew immediately that I wanted our little Songful Style group to create an outfit using this song as our inspiration. (Scroll down to the end of the post for the lyrics.)
To be completely honest, I didn’t have a clue what I was going to wear. Taylor wears so many incredible outfits in her video, and her album cover is pretty cool too. And then, I just happened to be in a thrift shop a few weeks ago when I stumbled across the most beautiful long, black dress in crushed velvet. It reminded me of Morticia Addams, it was utter perfection! Of course I snapped it up…for a measly 4 euros too lol. I didn’t even try it on, I just had a feeling it would fit. I’m so glad it did.
But I still didn’t know how I would style it using inspiration from this song. I watched the video again and decided to wear the dress how Taylor might have worn it should it have been a wardrobe possibility for the music video…that, and the scene where she’s bathing in jewels lol. I also tried to be a little artistic by creating my own album cover artwork! I hope you can see my inspiration, and enjoy the photos as much as I did taking them!
So this simple outfit consists of the velvet black dress a la Morticia, my gorgeous Calla ankle boots, and loads and loads of bling (all of which was inherited). I’m not sure if this dress will ever get worn anywhere special, or if it will remain in my wardrobe in readiness for any future fancy dress efforts lol. But I adore it, so I’m keeping it regardless. The only thing I’m really missing is the red nails, but I just wasn’t in the mood to paint them red so they’re left bare for these pics.
Don’t forget to check out Shelbee’s and Marsha’s interpretations, and please link up any posts you have related to this month’s Songful Style. For next month, it was Shelbee’s choice of song, and boy does she have a fun one for us! The November song choice is, The Witch Doctor performed by Ross Bagdasarian, under his stage name David Seville (from Alvin and the Chipmunks!). Be sure to read her post to find out what she came up with this song, it’s a funny one!
LYRICS
I don’t like your little games
Don’t like your tilted stage
The role you made me play of the fool
No, I don’t like you
I don’t like your perfect crime
How you laugh when you lie
You said the gun was mine
Isn’t cool, no, I don’t like you (oh!)
But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time
I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me…
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do
I (I) don’t (don’t) like your kingdom keys (keys)
They (they) once belonged to me (me)
You (you) asked me for a place to sleep
Locked me out and threw a feast (what?)
The world moves on, another day another drama, drama
But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma
And then the world moves on, but one thing’s for sure
Maybe I got mine, but you’ll all get yours
But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time (nick of time)
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time (I do it all the time)
I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me…
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I’m sorry
But the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now
Why? Oh, ’cause she’s dead (oh)
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me…
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me…
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
