Welcome to February’s edition of Songful Style! Hosted by myself, Shelbee (Shelbee on the Edge), Marsha (Marsha in the Middle) and Michelle (Funky Fashion Style), Songful Style is a collaboration featuring outfits inspired by songs. We’re also inviting anyone who would like to join us, to post their own outfits in the link-up below. It doesn’t matter from what angle the song inspires the outfit, it can be from the lyrics, the title, the tune itself, the album cover, music video, etc. Last month our song was Tell Me Baby by Red Hot Red Chilli Peppers and was chosen by Michelle. This month, our Songful Style song was chosen by me and is Love at First Sight by Kylie Minogue.
But before I get on to that, I just wanted to apologise to those (very) few of you that usually take part in my Neverending Style link-up on Fridays. I was all set to write and publish my post on Friday morning but then…BAM…I was hit by a nasty vomiting bug and was pretty much incapacitated for a couple of days so I just couldn’t face doing a single thing, except sleep. But I’m back today and I’m excited to be sharing this month’s Songful Style post with my fabulous friends from across the pond, as well as Kylie of course.
So why did I choose Love at First Sight? Well, it’s one of those catchy songs that I love, it’s February so it’s the month of love (!), and also because of Kylie’s outfit in the video which I have always loved. It’s such a simple look—cargo/combat trousers, vest/tank top and yellow stiletto heels. Since the video first came out, I’ve coveted a pair of those yellow stilettos. But do you think I’ve ever actually found a pair? Nope. Have I ever actually physically looked? Nope. Lol. Oh well…. so for this challenge, I chose my only pair of pointy stilettos, which are green and blue plaid. The shape is quite similar to Kylie’s shoe, but the colour is completely different. But that didn’t stop me, because I really want to wear pointy heels for this challenge!
So, how did I come up with this look for Love at First Sight? Well…I clearly started with the shoes. Then the trousers. I had wanted to wear a pair of loose fitting combats just like Kylie’s, but realised none of mine really fit the bill, so I chose my cargo jeans (H&M a few months ago) instead. I had intended to pull the turn-ups down to make them long like Kylie’s but when I put the heels on with them turned up, I really liked the way it looked. It was a bit more ‘current’, if you know what I mean? Watch the video about how I came up with the look below.
I had my shoes, I had my trousers, what about a top? Well…it’s clearly far too cold to wear a little vest top, so instead I decided to look for something fitted that went well with the shoes. Also, I wanted a strong colour, because if you watch the Love at First Sight music video, you’ll see the backing dancers wear some pretty intense colours like orange and yellow; and purple and red. And my midnight blue turtle neck top (Zara) was simply perfect. As soon as I put it on, I knew it was exactly what I wanted to wear. But it was still a bit cold, so I figured I’d need a cardigan. And because I was obviously going for matchy matchy with the shoes, I chose my green one (H&M). I tried a black necklace like Kylie’s, but it didn’t look right, so I wore a silver and blue one instead. I added a pair of chunky earrings and a chunky ring, a blue handbag (a gift from my late MIL) and I was all set.
The final outfit looks nothing like Kylie’s, although it’s clearly inspired by it and I love how it all came together. what do you think? Is this the kind of look that you would wear? How would you interpret Kylie’s hit song? Join in and add your outfits to the link-up, below! I hope you’ll join us next month too, when we’ll be styling “Sweet Baby James” by James Tayor, a song chosen by Shelbee.

Love at First Sight lyrics
Thought that I was going crazy
Just havin’ one those days, yeah
Didn’t know what to do
Then there was you
And everything went from wrong to right
And the stars came out to fill up the sky
The music you were playin’ really blew my mind
It was love at first sight
‘Cause baby, when I heard you
For the first time I knew
We were meant to be as one
I was tired of running out of luck
Thinkin’ ’bout giving up, yeah
Didn’t know what to do
Then there was you
And everything went from wrong to right
And the stars came out to fill up the sky
The music you were playin’ really blew my mind
It was love at first sight
‘Cause baby, when I heard you (when I heard you)
For the first time I knew
We were meant to be as one (to be as one)
‘Cause baby, when I heard you
For the first time I knew
We were meant to be as one
Everythin’ went from wrong to right
And the stars came out and filled up the sky (up the sky)
The music you were playin’ really blew my mind
It was love at first sight
Love at first sight
Love at first sight
Love
Ooh, it was love, it was love at first sight
‘Cause baby, when I heard you (when I heard you)
For the first time I knew
We were meant to be as one (to be as one)
‘Cause baby, when I heard you (when I heard)
For the first time I knew
We were meant to be as one
