A few weeks ago, I decided it was time for a quirky makeover. I went to get my eyes tested because something just didn’t feel quite right. My eyesight had gradually deteriorated a little since my last test a year ago. Turns out, the deterioration wasn’t as bad as I thought, but my optician had an interesting suggestion – I should try progressive lenses. These lenses gradually change from top to bottom, providing clear vision at all distances, from far to near.
I’d actually tried progressive lenses before and hated them! They just didn’t work for me at all. But my optician asked me to bring in my old glasses, so he could figure out why they didn’t suit me. And here’s where things took an unexpected turn: It was all about the angle of the glasses! The fit was off, and that was the issue! Who knew that could make such a difference?
Once we got the lens situation sorted, we moved on to choosing new frames. I was determined to give myself a fresh, new look—a quirky makeover to match my evolving style. And, of course, what better way to do that than with a bold new pair of glasses? I didn’t have to look far. I found the perfect pair: thick, round frames, similar to the late great Iris Apfel’s iconic look. The moment I tried them on, I knew they were the ones. I’ve honestly never felt so comfortable in a new pair of glasses. And those progressive lenses? Perfection. I love them!
But wait, the makeover didn’t stop there. With my fabulous new glasses, I figured, why not go all in? I’ve always loved the look of curly hair, and whenever I’ve tried to curl my hair with curlers, plaits, or whatever, I’ve always adored the results. But what I really wanted was curls every day—without the hassle of having to style them all the time. I just needed to find the right person for the job.
That’s where Rachel came in. She’s my new favourite stylist, and let me tell you, she is an absolute legend! We hit it off right away, chatting and laughing throughout the entire appointment, realising we had so much in common. By the time I walked out of The Salon Alvor, I felt like a million dollars!
And here’s the fun part—the last time I had a perm was exactly 30 years ago! I was just 19, and I had so much hair. It was super long and just a mass of hair, really. I’ll be sharing a photo below (so you can giggle along with me) from back then. It’s a bit of a laugh looking at it now, but it’s part of the journey!

Over the years, my hair has been on quite the rollercoaster ride! I’ve had it long, chopped it all off into a pixie cut, grown it out again… and then done it all over! At one point, I even cut it all off for charity, which felt amazing to do. I’ve experimented with different styles, lengths, and textures, always embracing change when the mood struck. A while back, I decided to stop dyeing my hair, and I absolutely love my natural grey strands! Every now and then, I’ll throw on a fun wash-out colour—usually pink—for a little change. Though last year, I tried a dark blonde/light brown one that was meant to wash out… but didn’t. That was a bit of a bummer! But lesson learned—these days, I just embrace my natural colour and let the occasional pop of pink be my fun little rebellion! With all these hair transformations, I feel like I’ve finally found the one with my new curls.
Now, I’ve got these gorgeous curls again, and they feel so natural. Honestly, I’ve never felt more me than with this bold new look. It’s quirky, it’s fun, and it’s exactly what I’d imagined. And the curls? I swear they feel like they should have always been there!
I can only hope (and really, really hope) that the perm lasts as long as I want it to, but either way, I’m keeping up with it.
Just the other day, I took some photos of my quirky makeover to update my social media, YouTube channel, and blog to show off my new look. And let me tell you, I had so much fun doing it! You can probably tell by the photos how much I’m loving this bold, new me. I truly feel like this is the look I was always meant to have.
Take a look at a few of the snaps of my quirky makeover and let me know what you think!
I’m absolutely loving this new chapter and can’t wait to see where this fresh, quirky look takes me.
