It’s been a little while since I took part in SIA because I kept missing the deadlines but I’m thrilled to be back! This week’s Style Imitating Art inspiration piece is Portrait of Saskia van Uylenburgh by Rembrandt. Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar (14 Shades of Grey), Terri (Meadow Tree Style) and their brand new co-host (and my dear friend) Shelbee (Shelbee on the Edge). Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of the hosts selects an inspiration image and they each post the image on their blogs. The following Monday they share their art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10pm Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog. This week, the curator is Terri.
Portrait of Saskia van Uylenburgh isn’t exactly the kind of art I’d have on my walls but I can certainly see the appeal. The deep shades of red and brown are quite beautiful, and I love the addition of the golds in the woman’s outfit. So that’s exactly from where I took my inspiration for my own look. I dug out the only thing in my wardrobe in a deep shade of oxblood red—this shirt from Massimo Dutti. I must admit, I bought this shirt on a whim because it was in the sale a few years ago and I loved the colour. I quite dislike the shape of it though, and the fabric is odd. It’s almost a rough, soft cotton (if that isn’t an oxymoron, I don’t know what is! lol) if that makes any sense? Anyway, I kept it because of the colour but I hardly ever wear it. I do, however, like it with these trousers (from John Lewis a few years ago). Unfortunately, the trousers are currently a tad snug due to my perimenopausal body (!).
I added several gold necklaces and some red and gold earrings, alongside a cute brown leather handbag that I discovered a couple of months ago from a local thrift shop. It’s cute, isn’t it? The shoes are from Carvela and, again, they were bought on a whim and I hardly wear them. I can’t quite put my finger on why, because they are quire gorgeous, and not too uncomfortable! Perhaps I ought to put them at the forefront of my wardrobe to encourage me to wear them more often!
My outfit was completed with my favourite Massimo Dutti ‘poncho’. It’s not really a poncho, but I’m never quite sure what to call it. It’s not a scarf either. It’s kind of like a wearable blanket. I’ve had it at least six years and I use it a lot at this time of year. It’s very snuggly. And I do like to snuggle!
So that’s my outfit inspired by Portrait of Saskia van Uylenburgh by Rembrandt. If you want to learn more about this painting, visit Terri’s initial post on the subject. That’s it for today. I hope you’ll stop by for a visit on Friday and join the Neverending Style link-up. This week, I’ll be showing off my new favourite shirt dress! See you then!
