This week’s Style Imitating Art inspiration piece is Serving Fish by Victo Ngai. Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar (14 Shades of Grey), Terri (Meadow Tree Style), and Daenel (Living Outside the Stacks). Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of the hosts selects an inspiration image and they each post the image on their blogs. The following Monday they share their art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10pm Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog. This week, the curator is Salazar. For the last Style Imitating Art challenge, we styled Ellen Terry as Lady MacBeth by John Singer Sargent.
I was blown away by the beauty of Serving Fish by Victo Ngai, and delighted to have the chance to style it. However, after I’d taken my photos, I was a little disappointed that I’d neglected to include more of the gorgeous yellowy gold tones, so I think I might try and style it again sometime! Instead though, on this occasion, I focussed more on the black in the painting as well as the pearls.
Everything I’m wearing in this outfit is quite old—a black blouse with a faint gold stripe was from Massimo Dutti, the black trousers were from C&A and the shoes were from a local store here in the Algarve. As for my jewellery, some of it came from my MIL, whereas a couple of the pearl necklaces (wrapped around my wrist and my hair) were inherited from my late step-mother-in-law, as was the mother-of-pearl effect clutch handbag.
When I first saw Serving Fish by Victo Ngai on Daenel’s blog (she was the one who chose it), I thought I would probably go all out and wear a long black dress and try and do a fancy up-do. However, I soon decided that I’d prefer to style it in a way that I would for a dinner out, for example. Plus, the fact that I’m quite useless at doing up-dos lol!!
How about you. How would you style this stunning painting?
