Style Imitating Art: Jazz Stories by Faith Ringgold

This week’s Style Imitating Art inspiration piece is Jazz Stories: Mama Can Sing, Papa Can Blow #1: Somebody Stole My Broken Heart by Faith Ringgold. Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar (14 Shades of Grey), Terri (Meadow Tree Style), and Daenel (Living Outside the Stacks). Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of the hosts selects an inspiration image and they each post the image on their blogs. The following Monday they share their art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10pm Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog. This week, the curator is Daenel. For the last Style Imitating Art challenge, we styled Decoupage by Mary Delany.

When I first saw Daenel’s inspiration piece, I grinned because I knew immediately what I was going to wear. It was as if the jazz singer in this artwork is wearing my exact dress lol. You might recognise the style of the dress because this summer, I’ve shown you two others the same. I bought the first one from C&A and when I got it home, I realised I loved it so much that I needed to buy the other two as well lol. They’re the perfect summer dresses.

Of course, it’s no longer summer, but days are still in the high 20s here in the Algarve so it is warm enough to wear this dress. But because I go from being too hot to being too cold in seconds, I’ve got my trusty denim jacket for added warmth. I’ve also got my red Skechers to keep my tootsies warm too lol. I’m starting to realise that I really ought to find myself another pair of red shoes, because these are all I’ve got—and I wore them in the last SIA post.

As for the Jazz Stories artwork, I decided to completely copy the jazz singer’s look, adding a pale blue chunky necklace and large pearl earrings (both were gifts from MIL). It’s just a shame I didn’t have hunky jazz musicians to back me up!

Isn’t Jazz Stories by Faith Ringgold a gorgeous piece of art? I adore all the colours. I’m also a huge fan of jazz—we listen to it all the time at home and in the car. But back to SIA, how would you style this piece?
