BOOK REVIEW: Silent by David Mellon

Silent by David Mellon

received a copy of Silent by David Mellon (quite some time ago!) from the publishers, in lieu of an honest and unbiased review…

Silent by David Mellon

Adi is an outsider, rejected by both her British father’s and Indian mother’s cultures, so she is no stranger to trouble. But when a mysterious agitator called Coal kidnaps Adi’s twin brothers, Adi has to rely on herself to find them. With strength and cunning as fierce as any boy’s, she decides to cut her hair and put on a military uniform to slip unnoticed through the chaos of World War I. When Adi finds a pocket watch that could be the clue to her lost brothers, she must figure out a way to decode it–before time runs out.

My Review of Silent by David Mellon

Okay, so this is one of those peculiar books that I can’t decide whether I really liked it or rather disliked it. I know that sounds totally odd and nonsensical, but it just happens to be how I feel about Silent by David Mellon.

At first, I rather liked the story until I got a little waylaid in the middle, and then the latter third was quite gripping. But then the very ending just had me stumped. Yes the main question was answered but then there just seemed to be a lot of gobbledegook in the final pages. Not literal gobbledegook, just weirdness. I can’t describe it without giving the story away. So I won’t even try. I will leave it for you to decide.

If you loved The Book Thief by Marcus Zusack (which I did), then I really think this book will appeal to you. It really is one of the most bizarre stories I have ever read. Having said that, David Mellon is a wonderful writer and I loved his style. I haven’t decided yet whether I would read any more of his books though!
