Songful Style: Let’s style These Dreams by Heart

If you’ve been following along with my Songful Style posts, you know the drill! Each month, my fabulous blogging friends (Shelbee and Marsha) and I come together to create an outfit inspired by a song. Last month, Shelbee picked Vienna by Billy Joel. And this month I chose one of my all-time favourite 80s classics, These Dreams by Heart.

I’m thrilled to share my Songful Style outfit this month for These Dreams. The song’s haunting melody and poetic lyrics have stood the test of time, and I couldn’t wait to create an outfit that captures that dreamy, yet bold essence.

These Dreams was released in 1986 and became Heart’s first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The song, written by Bernie Taupin and Martin Page, features Nancy Wilson on lead vocals, which marked a significant moment since Ann Wilson usually handled lead. The ethereal lyrics speak of dreams and escapism, blending perfectly with Heart’s signature mix of hard rock and softer, more emotional ballads. Heart, fronted by the Wilson sisters, is renowned for their powerful blend of rock, folk, and pop, dominating the charts through the 70s and 80s.

The 80s vibe was my main focus, and when I saw that the album cover featured red and black, I knew my new red military-style blazer from Vinted was perfect. It instantly gives off that iconic 80s look—Michael even said I had an Adam Ant thing going on (which totally made me laugh). The gold buttons add just the right amount of drama, don’t you think? Also, I thought the jacket was a good ‘dupe’ for the pale pink jacket featured in the beginning of the music video—also she was wearing tight black leggings…

So to keep things rocking, I paired it with my trusty black skinny jeans for that classic rock chick feel. For shoes, I opted for my black Ecco pointy trainers. Honestly, I wanted to wear boots, but with the weather still warm, they’re all packed away for now. Trainers work for this, though, keeping it casual yet chic!

Now, let’s talk about the lacy top! In true Heart fashion, I wanted a bit of sultry femininity, especially since the Wilson sisters often rocked some serious cleavage back in the day. Looking at the photos now, I might have gone a bit far with that—but hey, I’m channeling my inner 80s diva, right? I completed the look with a black goth-style choker, another nod to Heart’s signature style.

I have to mention, my hair didn’t exactly cooperate—I was hoping for bigger, 80s-inspired volume, but it ended up a little flat. Sometimes, your hair just has other ideas!

Finally, let’s not forget how timeless These Dreams is. I recently watched a performance of the song by Heart from a few years ago, and honestly, I think I love them even more now. The song has such a beautiful, ethereal quality that resonates no matter how much time has passed. It’s a piece of musical magic from an era that keeps inspiring me.

So, what do you think of this look? Did I capture the 80s Heart vibe? Let me know! Don’t forget to check out how Shelbee and Marsha styled this song, and then please add your posts to the link up, below! Next month, come and join in the fun with Marsha’s song choice, Wildflowers by Tom Petty.
