Welcome to July’s Songful Style post! Hosted by myself, Shelbee (Shelbee on the Edge), Michelle (My Bijou Life), Marsha (Marsha in the Middle) and Anne (Spy Girl), Songful Style is a collaboration featuring outfits inspired by songs. We’re also inviting anyone who would like to join us, to post their own outfits in the link-up below. It doesn’t matter from what angle the song inspires the outfit, it can be from the lyrics, the tune itself, the album cover, music video, etc. Last month our song was Behind the Wall of Sleep by Pat DiNizio and The Smithereens, chosen by Anne. This month, our Songful Style song was chosen by me and is When Doves Cry.
There’s something about 80s music, isn’t there? It just gets me right in the pit of my stomach, and pulls at my heart (probably yet another reason why I’m so obsessed with Stranger Things!). I adore the majority of music from that era, especially soft rock. I’m not sure if you would put Prince under that genre or whether you put him under pop. Either way, his music was amazing. When Doves Cry is one of those tunes that, as soon as I hear the intro, it just makes me want to get up and dance—all slow and sultry lol! It’s simply beautiful. The video is all hot and sexy too. In fact, it was rather controversial at the time, because music executives believed it to be too explicit for TV! Gosh…I wonder what they must think about the kind of videos that are out these days (rolls eyes).
When Doves Cry lyrics
Dig if you will the picture
Of you and I engaged in a kiss
The sweat of your body covers me
Can you my darling
Can you picture this?
Dream, if you can, a courtyard
An ocean of violets in bloom
Animals strike curious poses
They feel the heat
The heat between me and you
How can you just leave me standing
Alone in a world that’s so cold? (So cold)
Maybe I’m just too demanding
Maybe I’m just like my father, too bold
Maybe you’re just like my mother
She’s never satisfied (she’s never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry
Touch if you will my stomach
Feel how it trembles inside
You’ve got the butterflies all tied up
Don’t make me chase you
Even doves have pride
How could you just leave me standing
Alone in a world so cold? (World so cold)
Maybe I’m just too demanding
Maybe I’m just like my father, too bold
Maybe you’re just like my mother
She’s never satisfied (she’s never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry
How can you just leave me standing
Alone in a world that’s so cold? (A world that’s so cold)
Maybe I’m just too demanding (maybe, maybe I’m like my father)
Maybe I’m just like my father too bold (you know he’s too bold)
Maybe you’re just like my mother (maybe you’re just like my mother)
She’s never satisfied (she’s never, never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other? (Why do we scream, why)
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry
When doves cry (doves cry, doves cry)
When doves cry (doves cry, doves cry)
Don’t cry (don’t cry)
My outfit inspiration
Okay, I admit, even though I was the one that chose this song, I struggled big time! I even considered just appearing naked in a bathtub LOL! I searched the shops to see if I could find something, but…zip, nada, rien, zilch. I think the main problem stemmed from the fact that it’s freaking hot AF here right now, and it’s so difficult to wear clothes, otherwise I would have happily donned a frilly white shirt and trousers. But I just couldn’t. So…I watched the video several times and then spotted this…that’s when I knew I could pull this off!
So I decided to wear my new 80s tee from Stradivarius, alongside my Massimo Dutti white jeans and black Calla pumps. Of course, the look wouldn’t be complete without my ‘face’ handbag which was a gift from my MIL a couple of years ago. I know the look doesn’t scream Prince (it probably screams more Madonna actually lol), but I don’t think it’s a bad interpretation from the face image I spotted, right?! Did you join us this month? If so, please link up your posts below. I’m excited to see how you managed to style this very difficult summer style prompt lol!
Next month’s song was chosen by Shelbee (and the reason why she chose it will probably have you reaching for the hankies!), and is “Mama” by Beth Hart. See you soon!
