This week’s Style Imitating Art theme is Aurora Borealis by Frederic Edwin Church. Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar (14 Shades of Grey), Terri (Meadow Tree Style), and Daenel (Living Outside the Stacks). Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of the hosts selects an inspiration image and they each post the image on their blogs. The following Monday they share their art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10 PM Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog. It’s enormous fun, I can tell you!
This is the third time that I have taken part and each time it has pushed me to get creative with my clothing. The first time we were inspired by Cezanne’s Woman With a Coffee Pot, the last time it was Nick Cage’s Soundsuit and today it’s Aurora Borealis by Frederic Edwin Church, a truly breathtaking piece of artwork.
I had originally intended to wear browns, until I realised the brown section of my wardrobe is sadly lacking! So I decided to go darker and wear a black skirt. It was important to me that I chose something that was a little floaty, due to the ‘floatiness’ feeling I got when gazing at the image. (I know ‘floatiness’ isn’t a real word, by the way lol!). I also knew that I wanted to add bright oranges and cyans too to reflect those gorgeous colours in the sky that are also reflected in the water.
I ended up wearing an orange jumper (Mango) because the only other thing I could have worn (an even brighter orange top), featured in the my last Style Imitating Art outfit! The pops of cyan came in the form of this turquoise necklace that was given to me for Christmas by my in-laws. Isn’t it cute? My mother-in-law also gave me the bracelet, which seemed to go well with my general theme. And, yes, she gave me the ring too lol.
As for shoes, my Rockport sandals told me to wear them, for some reason lol. And the brown tasselled handbag finished the look off. It’s not the most inspiring outfit, I know, but it’s simply what came together on the day! I do love that painting though. It’s one of those images that you can just gaze at for ages and ages, don’t you think? I’d happily have it on my wall at home!
