Tell Us About Reinvention: A New You—Or Just More You?

Welcome back to another Tell Us About post! Last month, we explored the theme of Ways to Show Love, and this month, our topic is Reinvention, chosen by the lovely MK. Reinvention is something that happens to all of us at some point in our lives—sometimes intentionally, sometimes unexpectedly. Let’s dive into how it has shaped my life.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that reinvention isn’t about becoming someone else—it’s about becoming more you.

Looking back, I can see how many times I’ve evolved, shifted, and transformed, each time feeling a little more comfortable in my own skin. Moving from England to Portugal as a child was probably my first big reinvention. Back then, I had a strong Yorkshire accent and a very English way of seeing the world. Over the years, that faded (along with my accent), and I became more European in my habits and outlook—though I still make a cracking cup of tea!

Then came 40, and with it, another reinvention. I trained as a yoga teacher, deepened my spirituality, and embraced a more mindful, connected way of living. At the same time, my career shifted. My blog, once solely focused on books, expanded into lifestyle, style, and all the things that inspire me. I started experimenting with my look—having fun with fashion, trying new hairstyles (long, short, pixie cut, etc), and, most importantly, stopped caring what other people thought. That, I think, was the biggest reinvention of all.

Most recently, I’ve embraced a look that feels more me than ever before—curly hair, oversized round glasses, a slightly kookie, creative vibe. An online friend recently told me this look makes me seem like a woman who truly knows herself. And honestly? That was one of the best compliments I’ve ever received. Reinvention isn’t about changing for the sake of it; it’s about uncovering layers of yourself that were always there, just waiting for the right moment to shine.

Reinvention is a powerful tool, whether you’re switching careers, shifting your mindset, or just trying a bold new lipstick colour. Some of the most successful people have mastered the art of reinvention—Madonna, Lady Gaga, and, more recently, Sabrina Carpenter have all transformed themselves in ways that catapulted their careers. And they’re not alone. David Bowie, Taylor Swift, and even actors like Matthew McConaughey (who famously went from rom-com star to Oscar-winning actor) have used reinvention to carve out new paths for themselves.

But reinvention isn’t just for celebrities. Anyone can do it. If you’re feeling stuck or uninspired, why not shake things up? Here are a few ways to reinvent yourself:

  • Play with your personal style. Try a new haircut, experiment with fashion, or wear something that feels like an extension of your personality.
  • Learn something new. Whether it’s a yoga course, an online class, or a creative hobby, expanding your skills can shift your mindset in unexpected ways.
  • Let go of what others think. The biggest breakthroughs come when you stop worrying about fitting into a box.
  • Use imagination and playfulness. Reinvention doesn’t have to be serious! Embracing your inner child, playing with different ideas, and allowing yourself to dream can be transformational. I talk about this more in my YouTube video on Imagination—check it out here: https://youtu.be/Nac6vyOt3cg.
  • Embrace the unknown. Who knows what reinvention is around the corner? Stay open to change, and you might surprise yourself.

At the end of the day, I’m still the same person I’ve always been—but each reinvention has helped mould me into the woman I am today. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!
