Songful Style | What’s Love Got To Do With It | Link-Up

Welcome to the June edition of Songful Style! Hosted by myself, Shelbee (Shelbee on the Edge) and Marsha (Marsha in the Middle), Songful Style is a collaboration featuring outfits inspired by songs. We’re also inviting anyone who would like to join us to post their own outfits in the link-up below. It doesn’t matter from what angle the song inspires the outfit—it can be from the lyrics, the title, the tune itself, the album cover, or even the music video. Last month, our song was “It’s All About the Base” by Megan Trainor, chosen by Michelle, who has now left us to focus on her other blog. This month, our Songful Style song was chosen by me, and it’s “What’s Love Got to Do with It” by the amazing, Tina Turner, who sadly passed away recently. Before I continue, let me just apologise for my missing the Neverending Style link-up on Friday and for the lateness of this post. Things have just been a bit crazy here lately and on top of that, we’ve had some seriously HOT HOT SCORCHIO days and I just couldn’t bear the thought of sitting in my office. I seriously cannot wait for the new house to be built because it will be so much cooler than this place lol!

Tina Turner’s fabulous song, “What’s Love Got to Do with It” became an instant hit when it stormed the charts in the 1980s. The song is an anthem of empowerment and independence, with Tina’s powerful vocals bringing the lyrics to life. The song is all about the complexities of love, challenging conventional notions and reminding us that love is not always the answer to everything. The song’s universal appeal and Tina’s undeniable talent have solidified its place as a timeless classic.

For my Songful Style tribute to Tina Turner’s iconic song, I decided to pretty much copy her look—a classic Little Black Dress (LBD) and denim jacket. The funny thing is, since taking the photos, I’ve re-watched the video and realised she wasn’t wearing an LBD at all! She was wearing a leather skirt and black top. Oh well…I also wanted to create a casual yet stylish look that captures the essence of her music and the free-spirited energy it exudes. My LBD is just a cheap one that I bought a couple of years ago from H&M, I don’t wear it very often because I feel a little self conscious in such a body skimming piece! But it’s one of several LBDs I have in my wardrobe. I think a classic little black dress is an essential piece that transcends trends and effortlessly flatters every body type (depending on the shape of the dress, of course!). In this case, its simplicity allows me to showcase other elements of the look while embodying the spirit of Tina’s music.

pink espadrilles

To add a touch of colour and playfulness, I’ve opted for vibrant pink espadrilles, recently purchased from M&S. Here’s the link if you’re interested! The second I laid eyes on these beauties, I knew I had to have them, and I was thrilled to find out that M&S have a European base, so no customs duties YAY! These comfortable and gorgeous shoes perfectly embody the boldness and vivacity of Tina Turner’s music, adding a playful twist to the overall look.

For a casual, laid-back vibe (and to honour Tina’s classic look), I’ve layered an old denim jacket from Primark over the LBD. The distressed denim adds an element of nostalgia and lends a cool, effortless edge to the outfit. It’s a nod to Tina’s fearless fashion choices and her ability to effortlessly blend elegance with a touch of rock ‘n’ roll. I’ve always loved the way a denim jacket looks on top of a classic dress.

Adding sentimental value to the outfit, I’ve accessorized with a heart necklace inherited from my late Mother-in-Law. This beautiful piece serves as a reminder of the enduring power of love and the cherished memories shared with loved ones. Accompanying the necklace is a huge pink ring and black and silver bracelet, also inherited, which add a vintage touch and a hint of glamour to the overall ensemble. My animal print pink and black earrings are so old, but another touch of playfulness to the look.

Tina’s powerful vocals and bold style have left an indelible mark on the world, reminding us to embrace our individuality and challenge societal norms. I still can’t believe she’s no longer with us, but she has left us with something so beautiful and so powerful: her music. Through the Songful Style collaboration, we celebrate the connection between music and fashion, inviting everyone to share their own inspired outfits. I hope you can join us this month.
